Southern is one of the largest US utilities, serving 9 million customers through vertically integrated electric utilities in three states and natural gas distribution utilities in four states. It owns 46 gigawatts of rate-regulated generating capacity, mainly serving Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi. Its subsidiary Southern Power owns 13 gigawatts of natural gas and renewable generation across the US, selling the electricity largely under long-term contracts.
